A sling is a projectile weapon typically used to throw blunt missiles at the enemy. There are two kinds of sling, the shepherds sling & the stave sling. The shepherds sling is almost certainly the one used by David to slay Goliath. It is the easiest to construct, carry & use. The stave sling is more important militarily & can throw much farther & harder. This is one of the most portable & least expensive personal weapons ever developed. Ancient armies probably used variations on it because so many men were already familiar with it. It is so lightweight that most soldiers can carry it as an auxiliary weapon. The sling is much cheaper & easier to use than other ancient ranged weapons, but much less powerful & by the middle ages was militarily extinct. One does not whirl it around ones head. One uses a shepherds sling to make an overhand throw, using the sling to extend ones arm. This is relatively accurate, instinctive & quite powerful. One faces 60 degrees away from the target, with ones weak hand closest to the target.
