Web Definition: Sign Language
A sign language is a language which uses gestures instead of sound to convey meaning - combining handshapes, orientation & movement of the hands, arms or body, facial expressions & lip-patterns. Sign languages are usually developed in deaf communities, which include interpreters & friends & families of deaf people as well as people who are deaf or hearing-impaired themselves. Contrary to popular belief, sign language is not universal. Wherever communities of deaf people exist, sign languages develop. As with spoken languages, these vary from region to region. They are not based on the spoken language in the country of origin. Hundreds of deaf sign languages are in use around the world & are at the core of local Deaf cultures. Sign languages have also arisen in hearing communities. American Indians of the Great Plains region used a sign language to communicate among tribes who used different spoken languages & there are a few users still alive today.
