Web Definition: Religious Icons
An icon is an artistic visual representation or symbol of anything considered holy & divine, such as God, saints or deities. An icon could be a painting, sculpture, or mosaic. By extension, icon is also used in the general sense of symbol — ie a name, face, or picture that is readily recognized by most people to represent some well-known entities or attributes. & in the most holy house he made two cherubims of image work & overlaid them with gold.
