Web Definition: Prepress
Prepress is the term used in the printing & publishing industries for the processes & procedures that occur between acceptance of a written manuscript & original artwork & conclude with a printing plate, image carrier, or forme, ready for mounting on a printing press. During the 1980s & 1990s, electronic publishing techniques largely supplanted the traditional processes & as of 2004 the word prepress is almost synonymous with digital prepress. The processes of copyediting, markup, proofreading, typesetting of text, photography of artwork, retouching, screening, trapping, page layout, page assembly, imposition & photomechanics are all considered part of prepress & are largely common to traditional & digital prepress. Some prepress processes specific to digital workflows include preflighting, color management & RIPping. The specific processes used in a particular printing application is called a workflow and, of course, vary, depending on the printing process, the final product & on choices of technology.
