PBS YOU was founded in the late 1990s as a 24/7 channel/network featuring formal & informal educational programs & college -related fare, largely to take advantage of available rights & satellite transponder space & eager customers for carriage among the satellite-dish & some cable television companies. PBS YOU has also included PBS Adult Learning Service telecourses for college credit & foreign language instruction, but as of October, 2005, is dropping these; how-to programs & public affairs programs & news predominate. Currently, PBS YOU is scheduled to cease operations at the end of January, 2006. DirecTV was set to discontinue broadcasting PBS YOU on December 15, 2005. However, the network set to replace PBS YOU on DirecTV was not ready to replace it on that date, so DirecTV opted to retain PBS YOU on its schedule for the time being. DirecTV discontinued PBS YOU on January 31, 2006, at 6 AM EST, replacing it with the TCT Network. Dish Network had already discontinued PBS YOU as of Wednesday, January 24, 2006.
