The National Aeronautics & Space Administration is the government agency responsible for the United States of America s space program & long-term general aerospace research. A civilian organization, it conducts research into both civilian & military aerospace systems. To understand & protect our home planet ;. To explore the Universe & search for life ; and. To inspire the next generation of explorers. Following the Soviet space program s launch of the worlds first man-made satellite on October 4, 1957, the attention of the United States turned toward its own fledgling space efforts. The US Congress, alarmed by the perceived threat to American security & technological leadership, urged immediate & strong action; President Dwight D Eisenhower & his advisers counseled more deliberate measures. Several months of debate produced agreement that a new federal agency was needed to conduct all nonmilitary activity in space. On July 29, 1958, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics & Space Act of 1958 establishing the National Aeronautics & Space Administration.
