A copyright is a form of intellectual property that grants its holder the sole legal right to copy their works of original expression, such as a literary work, movie, musical work or sound recording, painting, computer program, or industrial design, for a defined period of time. Copyrights do not cover ideas or facts, however, but only the particular expression of an idea. A copyright on a Mickey Mouse cartoon, for example, would not prevent others from creating artistic works about talking mice, but only limit their rights to distribute the original Disney s cartoon & their ability to create derivative works copying that particular talking mouse too closely. Both copyrights & patents grant certain exclusive rights over their respective subject matter that are enforceable against everyone.
